Once the baby turtles are free from the eggshells, the egg tooth falls on its own within the next few days. The hatchlings use this tooth to break open the eggshell and come out of it. So, the hatchlings are born with an egg tooth. Female turtles lay eggs, but the eggshells are tough to crack. That was about adult turtles, but what about baby turtles? Do they have teeth? Let us find out. So, although turtles do not have teeth, they have strong beaks and jaws that act as suitable replacements. However, some soft-shelled species of turtles have soft lips instead of sharp beaks. Snapping turtles are the best example of this as they have a strong beak. They do this with the help of their tongues.

Turtles then take this bite-sized food into their mouth and move it to the rear of the mouth for swallowing. The beaks are very strong and exert tremendous pressure to bite off food into small chunks. But what if they have to cut their food into small parts to consume it?įor cutting the food, turtles have sharp beaks that do the work of teeth.

Now, this works well when turtles can swallow their food directly. Sea turtles then close their jaws and swallow the prey easily. They often put their tongue out to lure the small prey underwater and then pull the prey in their mouth. The primary food of these aquatic species of turtles is small fish and insects. The best example of this are sea turtles. Turtles can eat food without teeth because they swallow their food completely using their tongues. They use their large mouth and jaw to bite their food. Turtles have no difficulty in eating their food without teeth. Now that you know turtles do not have teeth, let’s understand what they have instead of teeth that acts as a replacement. Hatchlings have a tooth known as the egg tooth or caruncle that does not last long. Some turtle species have ridges along the inside of their beaks, whereas others have powerful jaws and sharp, pointy beaks. Instead, they have a sharp beak that helps them to eat. Along with their shells, the other trait that sets them apart from other cold-blooded reptiles are their teeth. This week, Turtle A weighs 495 grams and measures 14.4 cm long Turtle B weighs 709 grams and measures 16.9 cm long. Simple things like taking your own reusable grocery bag to the store with you and remembering not to release any balloons in the air can help out these amazing ocean animals.įor more information on how to help, visit our sea turtle conservation page. Because sea turtles confuse jellies for other things floating in the ocean like plastic grocery bags and balloons, it is so important that we do our part. Sea turtles help keep the jelly populations in check. We want them to eat the stinging animals so jelly populations don’t bloom at the beach when we swim in the ocean. This is also why it is so important to help out our sea turtle populations. In fact, because leatherbacks are so much bigger than other sea turtles, their papillae-lined esophagus is six times longer than other sea turtle’s, which allows them to swallow a lot of jellies. A sea turtle that big needs to eat a lot of jellyfish, since they are mostly made out of water. The largest species of sea turtle, the leatherback, can weigh as much as 2,000 lbs and grow as long as 6 feet. Not only do they protect the turtle’s throat and mouth from jellyfish stings, they also help break down the food and expel excess salt water. They are made out of the same protein found in our hair and nails, keratin. These papillae line the turtle’s esophagus from the opening of their mouth all the way to the stomach. Inside of a sea turtles mouth looks different than a humans, with spiny projections pointing inward towards the animal’s throat. Sea turtles have special adaptations to protect them from sea jelly venom called papillae. Have you ever wondered how a sea turtle can eat a jelly without being harmed? If you’ve ever been stung by a jellyfish, you know it can be painful. You may know sea turtles love to eat jellyfish.
